Here’s the story:

So I started off the week feeling a little scratchyness in my throat, my body felt chilly so I thought, uh oh… here we go with the cold season! Is it the change in weather? Or is my immune system’s defense low? Well, clearly it is! I was not able to let the cold invaders, the bateria win, not on my watch. Challenge to take on: I said, let’s see if I can get over my cold not in a few days, not in one day but in a few hours…. How is this gonna happen? By waging a full-scale war that’s how!

I bought a few herbs including an herbal blend called Echinacea++ and the dried Astragalus root. Got the products from Highwind Herbs, which I recommend. They are a locally-based supplier of organic, home-farm-grown herbs.

To make the tea:

  • Bring a cup of water to boiling,
  • I dropped in a few slices of the dried Astragalus root (1 is good, 2 for extra strength) and
  • After the water took in the flavors a bit, I added the Echinacea blend (1 or 2 teaspoons is more than enough, dried stuff go a long way and are still good after a few uses!).
  • After a few minutes, turn off, let it simmer and voila! Medicine in a cup!
  • Added honey (I am out of real maple syrup right now).

About these healing plants:

First let’s start off with the Echinacea Blend which contains Echinacea, Mullein and Peppermint. This is a special blend exclusively prepared by Highwind Herbs  to “boost the immune system and to aid in fighting off unwanted germs that cause flus colds and viruses” as said on their website.

The Astragalus root is native to China and other Asian countries (i.e. JPN, Korea) and has been known to build up the immune system. It has a delicious mildly sweet taste and grainy texture when chewed. I would recommend chewing some of it after you’ve consumed the tea as a replacement for gum! Build up your immune system and cleanse your teeth and gums on the go! (I mean I wouldn’t replace teeth-brushing or anything, but would certainly compliment it!) Whether you’re on your way to work or  riding the subway!

So how’d I fare with the challenge I took on?

Well, the scratchyness went away within one to two hours and I felt totally renewed by mid-day. No sniffling or coldness, body temperature up to normal! Was shocked at the speed. Towards the end of the day however, I got a few chills. But I think I know why. Lack of nutrients and I skipped a meal. Nice! See the come-back regimen here.
